Old Edwardian Madeline Grant competed in the semi-final of BBC’s Mastermind! Madeline, whose specialist subject was Jane Austen, was in the lead after the first round, but narrowly missed out after her general knowledge round.
Screenwriter and film director Mike Carter visited KEHS to host our annual Creative Writing Workshop. The session, which was attended by over 120 pupils from eight local primary schools, allowed the children to practise their story writing skills and learn new ways to come up with exciting storylines.
On Monday 5th February, KEHS welcomed over 100 children from six primary schools across Birmingham to our Physics Roadshow outreach workshop. Delivered by seven talented A Level Physicists, the workshop featured a fire tornado, giant bubbles, LED light tricks, smoke rings and lots of liquid nitrogen!
Birmingham Central Foodbank would like to thank all at KEHS for our donation of food and toiletries in December. We gave 30kg of food which is equal to approximately 71 meals. Many thanks to all who donated.
On Tuesday 6th February, two Upper Fifth and two Upper Sixth girls went to London to take part in the National Final of the Senior Mathematics Team Challenge competition. On Monday 12th February, philosopher and author Dr Stephen Law visited the school and spoke to students about his argument against the existence of God, 'The Evil-God Challenge'. In short, the argument can be stated as follows: 'why is belief in a good-god, significantly more reasonable than belief in an evil-god?'
On Thursday 15th February, Lower Fifth historians took a trip to the RAF Museum at Cosford, as part of our Cold War studies. We started the day with a talk from a Cold War veteran who flew in the RAF to post-war West Berlin as part of the supply crew who risked their lives and worked 18-hour days to provide supplies..
On Wednesday 14th February, Lower Sixth historians visited the National Civil War Museum in Newark. At the museum, we re-enacted the trial of Charles I wherein Judge John Bradshaw (Zahra) tried Charles (Lauren) in front of our court.
This term’s Performers’ Platform featured two chamber ensembles as well as several solo items. Rhea (oboe), Lydia (oboe) and Nikita (bassoon), with supporting continuo from Nathan, opened the evening with a Trio Sonata by Zelenka.
Training String Orchestra, conducted by Michelle Sanders, began this week’s Instrumental Evening by showcasing some traditional music from the British Isles; The Bells of Aberdyfi and The Star of County Down. They played with gusto and it was a real celebration of their term’s work.
Tickets are now available for the Period Poverty Showcase! The event, organised by our Sixth Formers, will take place on Thursday 1st March at the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre.
Congratulations to Hannah and Noor, in the Thirds, and Melissa in the Lower Fourth for competing in the annual King Edward’s School Fencing Competition. Melissa did extremely well, finishing third overall in the Under 14 competition and Noor, who has only been fencing for a few months, won her pool.
We are delighted to announce that KEHS has been awarded the TES Fundraising Initiative of the Year Award! The ceremony, which took place last night at Grosvenor House Hotel in London, saw more than 400 representatives from schools around the country come together for the TES Independent School Awards 2018.
On 7th February, a group of girls studying Classical Greek and Latin A Level spent the day at the East Midlands Association of Classical Teachers Sixth Form Conference at Loughborough High School. The day included two lectures, one that looked at Homer’s Odyssey, and another focusing on Virgil’s Aeneid.
On Friday 2nd February, six girls represented KEHS at the Oxford Schools Debating Competition. Nikita returned for her second year at the competition, capably joined by Tvisha. Anushna and Nimhara worked well together for their third competitive debate this year and Kiran was joined by novice Elise.
Lower Sixth Religious Studies students spent an excellent day on Wednesday at an Ethics and Philosophy conference held in Coventry. The day was led by world renowned writer and educator Peter Vardy and provided an excellent opportunity for everyone to explore a number of fascinating topics...
Congratulations to Lauren and Alice whose piano trio came third in the Intercollegiate National Piano Trio Competition which was held on Sunday 4th February at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Rhea, Renee and Lauren performed in yesterday’s well-attended lunchtime recital in the Ruddock Hall. Rhea (accompanied by Miss Sanders) displayed brilliant technical versatility in her renditions of Bozza’s Burlesque and the final movement of Saint-Saëns’ Sonata for Bassoon and Piano.
Congratulations to Natasha, Melissa and Melissa for gaining Bronze awards in last November’s three hour Physics Olympiad paper. Six other girls gained commendations.
Last term, a team of eight physicists (Melissa, Connie, Blessing, Saffron, Jess, Katrina, Maha and Lauren) from the Upper Fifth to Upper Sixth participated in the United Kingdom Young Physicist Tournament.
Thursday evening, Harry Potter Book Night, celebrated at KEHS for the second year, was once again enthusiastically supported by girls throughout the school. This year’s theme was ‘Fantastic Beasts’.
On Friday 26th January, the Thirds enjoyed a carousel of activities to complement their studies of Latin during Roman Day. The girls enjoyed a visit from a Roman soldier who shared his wealth of knowledge about the Roman World.
Dr Dafydd Daniel, lecturer in Christian Ethics at Jesus College, Oxford, visited the Religious Studies Department on Wednesday 31st January to speak to the Sixth Form students about the ethics of human relationships. He also gave our girls some helpful advice on the Oxford application process.
