Angela Clayton-Turner Visit

​On Tuesday, Angela Clayton-Turner, an Old Edwardian and chair of the London OE Club, came to talk to the Lower Sixth about Dementia. As an experienced dementia carer and "Dementia Friend", Angela's insight into this often sensitive topic was well-informed, detailed and eye-opening.

Awards Evening

On Friday 3rd October, we welcomed back the Class of 2017 for Awards Evening, a celebration of the wonderful things the girls achieved here at KEHS. After a warm reception reuniting with their former teachers, the girls and their families were regaled with a keynote speech from Old Edwardian Jess Butcher.

Birmingham Schools Debating Competition

On Saturday 4th November, three KEHS teams competed in the Birmingham University Debating Competition. Nikita and Maha achieved some early success winning the first round. All of the teams debated a variety of political, economic and cultural issues.

​On Sunday 27th October, Shivanii from the Lower Fifth hosted a charity concert in Barts Great Hall in London. The concert featured performances from several talented individuals and included works by Bach, Debussy and Chopin.

National Arts and Minds Competition

​Congratulations to Mattea in the Lower Fifth for winning the Creative Writing prize in the National Arts and Minds competition for her poem entitled 11 Floors. The Arts and Minds competition, run yearly by the NASWUT, celebrates cultural diversity and equality in schools.

Edexcel GCSE Astronomy Exam

Congratulations to Nikita in the Upper Fifth who has received a certificate from the Royal Astronomical Society to recognise her achievement of coming in the top 12 pupils nationally in last summer’s Edexcel GCSE Astronomy exam.​

Upper Fourth Film Making

​In the summer term, girls in the Upper Fourth had the opportunity to plot, script and produce their own short films during their ‘Creative Living’ enrichment class. Groups produced rough cuts for their films which were then judged by MCN Productions, a professional film company.

On Thursday 2nd November, all of our Thirds attended the annual Foundation Service, held to welcome new Year 7s joining the Foundation of Schools of King Edward VI. The nine schools of the Foundation were represented at the service in the awe-inspiring Great Hall at the University of Birmingham.

Music Department News

The lunchtime recital on November 2nd in Ruddock Hall featured Charlotte (oboe) who performed movements from Telemann’s Sonata in E minor accompanied by Ms Sanders (piano) and Isabel (cello), and Rubbra’s Sonata in C minor. Congratulations to both girls for their excellent, stylistic playing.

On the 24th October, 35 somewhat jaded sixth formers arrived at school to begin our journey to Kraków. After two coach journeys and one flight, we arrived at Hotel Batory where we were all grateful for a leisurely afternoon to explore Europe’s largest square.

Classics Trip to Rome

On Wednesday 18th October, we arrived at school at 1:00am, all bleary-eyed and shivering to begin our journey to Rome. Following a two-hour flight, we stepped off the coach at Ostia Antica to see Italy’s blue skies and summery warmth. Ostia Antica was an ancient town which was situated at the mouth of the River Tiber.

On Monday 9th October, Sixth Form students attended a public discussion focusing on the ‘Rising Problem of Homelessness’ at Opus Restaurant in Birmingham City Centre. The talk focused on a range of issues including ethics, economics, politics and philosophy.

Greek Theatre Visit

​On Wednesday 4th October, the Lower Fifth and Upper Sixth Ancient Greek students embarked on a slightly oversized (50 seat!) coach to Warwick School's Bridge House Theatre to watch Sophocles' Antigone. This was particularly useful for the Lower Sixth, as it is one of our set texts for A Level.

Performers' Platform

On Tuesday 10th October, several of our girls performed in the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre for the first Performers’ Platform. Jessie gave an expressive performance on the piano of Schubert's Impromptu op. 90 no. 2. Nikita performed the jaunty first movement of Hurlstone's Sonata in F major for the bassoon.

Instrumental Evening

​On Monday 2nd October, our season of instrumental evenings began with a piano instrumental evening in the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre. Rhea, Renee and Lauren performed as part of an oboe quintet, which concluded the concert with a performance of Theodore Dubois' Quintette. Well done to all involved!​

Girls Go Gold Conference

On Thursday, eight of our Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth girls attended the Girls Go Gold Conference. Students from Girls Schools' Association member schools across the country gathered in Wimbledon for an inspiring day of elite sport, focusing on what it takes to be a high performing athlete in today’s world.
