Lower Fourth Visit to Sleeping Beauty Ballet

On Thursday 15th February, Lower Fourth students went on a trip to the Hippodrome to see Birmingham Royal Ballet’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ to support our topic, ‘Music for Dance.’ The music which accompanied the ballet was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a well-known Russian composer who wrote over 100 works in his time. The story of the ballet goes much like the childhood fairy-tale that we all know: after the beautiful Princess Aurora is born, an evil fairy, furious that she has not been invited to be the child’s Godmother, casts a spell on the Princess and announces that she will die by pricking her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday. The Lilac Fairy, unable to remove the curse, promises that Aurora will be awoken by a Prince’s kiss after a hundred years. The trip helped us to understand more about our topic as well as giving us an opportunity to watch an incredible story through dance.
