Outstanding Examination Results

Girls at King Edward VI High School for Girls are celebrating record GCSE results achieving 74% A* grades and 92% A*/A. The percentage of A* grades beat last year’s score which was itself a record. 24 girls achieved all A* grades, 30 girls achieved 10 or more A* and 51 girls out of a year group of 75 achieved all A*/A.

Principal Ann Clark said “I am delighted with these outstanding results which are a tribute to the girls’ hard work and the dedication of the staff. Their families will be so proud of them”.

Bucking national trends where the number of pupils taking languages continues to plummet, 100% girls taking Spanish, Italian and Ancient Greek scored A* grades, whilst 80% girls gained A* and 96% A*/A in French, the language studied by all girls to GCSE level.

Girls also excelled in STEM subjects, traditionally the domain of their male counterparts, with 77% girls achieving A* in Mathematics, 75% achieving A* in Biology, 81% A* in Chemistry and Physics. Remarkably, 4 girls have been awarded Arkwright Scholarships in this, the 25th Anniversary year of the award, and these girls have notched up 40 A* grades between them. Each year the Arkwright Scholarships Trust strives to nurture the country’s future leaders of the Engineering Profession, and Arkwright Scholars are increasingly becoming recognised at national and international level. The two girls in our current Year 13 who were recipients of Arkwright scholarships two years ago have successfully gained places to read Engineering at the prestigious universities of Cambridge and Bath.
