Theatre Studies

The Edexcel A-level course places an emphasis on drama and theatre studies as a practical, intellectual and artistic subject. This specification provides a strong balance between exploring plays, creating and performing theatre, analysing practitioners and critically evaluating of all these elements.

The A-level Theatre Studies course has a six unit structure divided equally over two years (50% AS and 50% A2).

Unit 1 Exploration of drama and theatre

Interpretation and understanding of two plays (E.g. Mother Courage by Brecht and A Doll’s House by Ibsen) culminating in an internally assessed coursework piece. Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which playwrights create theatre and are affected by social, cultural and historical influences.

Unit 2 Text in performance

A practical examination of acting or design skills in a directed production of a play. In this externally assessed unit, students must demonstrate their effective use of performing or design skills and the manner in which they communicate their interpretation of a play to an audience.

Unit 3 Text in context

Two externally assessed examination questions. One question based on the context of the play performed in unit 2 and one question on a play seen in performance. Students will be asked to analyse and evaluate how characters, narrative and ideas are conveyed through theatrical presentations by applying knowledge of social, cultural and historical background.

A further three units are then taken in the U6 year to qualify for the full A level (A2):

Unit 4 Devising
Teacher assessment of the making and performing of a devised piece of theatre. Students will   employ knowledge of theatre styles (E.g. physical theatre, absurdist, naturalistic) to inform the creation of an original piece of theatre.

Unit 5 Text in performance II
Workshop presentation of a student directed play for an external examiner. Students will   work collaboratively to explore and rehearse a play from the viewpoint of a director, designer or performer.

Unit 6 Three examination questions based on the study of two plays.
Section A is based on a director’s approach to a play and section B is based on performance analysis and research. This is an open text examination into which research notes can be taken. (2½ hours).

Theatre studies are designed to enable students to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the language of drama as well as to develop their performing and analytical skills. In the roles of director, actor and critic, students become individual thinkers determining their own interpretations and judgements of the history and practice of theatre. The qualification provides students with the opportunity to analyse plays, writers and theorists in an intensive, yet dynamic environment - nurturing a passion for the philosophy of creative communication.

Miss Proops provided us with an ingenious interpretation of the timeless Romeo and Juliet. The 2008 Senior Production burst onto stage as the audience were enraptured by the tragic love story set in 80’s London. With a loud gunshot to announce the beginning of the play, the audience settled down to be amazed by the theatrical talents of KEHS/KES students.

The audience were carried along on the whirlwind journey of the star crossed lovers. With Beth Heaven as Juliet and James Taft as Romeo the two feuding families continued to battle out their differences despite the blossoming love of the youngest members of these two most influential families. Set against a stunning backdrop of the renowned balcony, the skinhead Capulets and the New Romantic Montagues had a final showdown resulting in the death of Mercutio and Tybalt which triggered off the catastrophic turn of events.

The whole cast was phenomenal in their portrayal of one of the most famous love stories ever written. The audience was captivated the entire time by the high professional acting talents of the students, and had a most memorable evening.
