Russian

Why learn Russian?
Russia is the world’s biggest country, far bigger than the U.S.A., stretching from Europe to Alaska. It occupies a large part of Europe to the Ural Mountains and then covers much of Asia as far as the Pacific Ocean, near Japan.
Spoken by over 250 million people worldwide, Russian is one of the world’s major languages. It is understood throughout Russia and Eastern Europe, and as Russians travel more widely, it is often heard in Western Europe. It is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world and is one of the five official languages of the United Nations. Russia is a fast-growing economy and world power, and Russian is therefore an increasingly important language for international business. Russian is not widely taught in schools, and this, combined with the steadily increasing demand for Russian speakers in Britain, means that it has a usefulness and application beyond that of the more frequently studied languages. If you are qualified in one of the less common foreign languages taught in Britain, such as Russian, you have a distinct advantage in the job market.
Russian at KEHS
Russian is offered to GCSE as an option alternate years, starting in year 10, and is also offered to A level. A high percentage of girls taking the Russian to GCSE choose to continue studying the language at advanced level, and it is a popular choice for study at university, often with another subject. If you are qualified in one of the less common foreign languages taught in Britain, such as Russian, you have a distinct advantage in the job market.
There are five lessons a week of Russian in lower 5 and upper 5, enough to be able to study the language comfortably and successfully to G.C.S.E. In these lessons, students learn to read, write, listen and speak in Russian. They learn to talk and write about themselves, their family, home, town, and interests. They learn the language of everyday tasks, such as shopping and getting about. At the same time, important, students learn about life in Russia: how people live, what their houses are like, what they eat and drink, how they spend their free time, what their towns and cities are like, and much more.
Exchange link
KEHS has an exchange link with a school in Russia, School no.21 in Arkhangel, a city in northern Russia, near to the White Sea and the Arctic Circle. There are regular trips to Arkhangel for girls studying Russian, during which there is the opportunity to practise the Russian they have learnt, get to know the city, and visit the Russian students in their homes, meeting their families. As part of the trip, we also visit St. Petersburg, Russia’s second city, situated on the Gulf of Finland. As part of our exchange link, we also regularly receive a group of girls from Arkhangel.
