In the first year girls spend a six-week block focusing on a particular activity, giving them the basis from which to develop skills and understanding of the activities being covered. They participate in hockey, netball, dance, gymnastics, swimming, fitness, rounders, tennis, athletics and are given taster lessons in touch rugby, badminton and ball skills. In the 2nd and third years, skills for all aforementioned activities are developed as well as providing opportunities for girls to share and use their own ideas through planning and performing. In the L5th different activities such as basketball, volleyball, lifesaving, softball and health related fitness are focused on. In the upper fifth these activities are developed further and there are opportunities to utilise the cardiovascular and multi gym equipment available in the fitness room. In the L5th external coaches are invited in to school to enable girls to follow a wider range of activities, which include, yoga, judo, kickboxing and lacrosse.
In the L5th Junior Sports Leaders award is offered which gives girls the opportunity to develop their organisational and communication skills as well as enhancing leadership qualities.
Dance Workshop
Junior dance workshop is held every Monday in period 8 (the last lesson of the day) and welcomes all girls who want to take part, whether or not they have any dance experience. First and second year girls are split up, within their years, into groups of around 14-18 girls. These groups are allocated two 6th formers to work with them, and choreograph a dance to perform in the March production. This is an excellent opportunity for the girls not only to take part in an extremely popular dance show, but also to make new friends with girls in their year and the 6th form. Throughout the course of dance workshop a strong bond is formed between the 6th form choreographers and their group.
There is also senior dance workshop for girls in the upper fourth and above, which takes place on Thursday lunch times. The girls learn “the senior dance” to perform in the March dance production together with the dances chosen at the auditions. The senior dance is often very moving and always highly praised, and this is quite a feat when there are over a hundred girls involved. The entire dance workshop joins together in the final dance of the production which closes the show, and is extremely energetic and fun.
