Physics
|
Physics is taught as a separate science throughout the school. The purpose of the physics lessons in the thirds (Yr 7) and the lower fourth (Yr 8) is to provide an insight into what physics involves, develop practical skills and facilitate an enjoyable and positive experience. The GCSE course is started in the upper fourth (Yr 9) and is sat at the end of the upper fifth (Yr 11). We have chosen to follow the International GCSE Physics course as it less prescriptive than other specifications so we are able to enrich the content using a wide range of resources. At A-level we follow the innovative and up to date Advancing Physics specification. We provide extra lunchtime sessions for girls who need help with particular topics or girls who are preparing for the Physics Olympiad or Oxbridge entry. Girls have the opportunity of participating in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These include talks by visiting speakers, trips to places of scientific interest and fun activities at lunchtimes. We have a seismometer that continually monitors earthquake activity, and many events around the world are detected each year. Astronomy activities are regularly arranged and girls are able to follow the GCSE Astronomy course through guided independant study. For the next two years (2011 to 2013) we are taking part in a Comenius study 'TIME' with schools in Rome, Lyon and Amsterdam. In addition, the Engineering club that meets at lunchtime gives girls opportunities to explore applied aspects of the subject.
Comenius School Partnerships Between 2009 and 2011, the school was involved in a highly successful project 'M.E.T.E.R.' which involved five schools in Europe working together in performing Physics and Astronomy activities and historical research. Below is an example of one of the activities carried out - the production of an animation 'The Longitude Problem' which tells the story of the research for a reliable method of determining longitude at sea. Visit to the Acropolis during the Athen's workshop of The M.E.T.E.R Comenius project May 2011.

GCSE Astronomy Results
2008-3 A*s
2009-5 A*s
2010-5 A*s, 5 A's and 1 B
2011-10 A*s, 1A (three girls came in the top 12 nationally) KEHS has been successful in gaining a British Council grant to carry out a project 'Time Investigation and Measurement in Europe' with two other schools from Rome and Amsterdam. The collaboration between the schools will involve pupils working together on a range of activities involving 'Time' and visiting each others' schools to attend workshops to report their findings. The activities will involve Physics and astronomy, but it will also provide cross-curricular opportunities. |
