ICT
|
ICT is taught as a dedicated subject in year 7. Pupils follow a key stage 3 ICT course, in which they imagine themselves in the role of a self-employed ICT Consultant. Their task is to visit a number of institutions in an imaginary town and then to undertake a variety of ICT based assignments for their ‘customers’. The course involves the use of a number of applications, typically Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint. Throughout the course, pupils are encouraged to be imaginative and creative in their use of ICT, and in every case to try and go beyond the minimum requirement of the assignment. They are encouraged, too, to help each other, to share ideas, and to assess critically their own work. In year 9, pupils have the opportunity to join the ICT Club, where, after school, they work towards the CLAiT Plus qualification. They normally complete the required number of assignments within the year and gain the CLAiT Plus certificate, the equivalent of a G.C.S.E. In year 12, they again have the option of dedicated ICT lessons, where they have another opportunity to work towards CLAiT Plus, or to build on their work in year 9 to obtain the CLAiT Plus diploma. There are two ICT rooms, each with 26 workstations, allowing each pupil in a class to have individual access to the network. There is a mobile ICT suite of 15 laptops and a number of other networked workstations around the school. In most subject areas, staff make full use of these facilities, frequently bringing their classes into one of the ICT rooms. In this way, ICT continues well beyond the dedicated ICT lessons. It is viewed as an essential and integral part of the curriculum at K.E.H.S. |
