Geography
|
Geography is the study of the inter-relationships between people, societies and their environment and how these relationships change over time. Geography helps us to understand and explain the complex world we live in. Never before has the study of geography been more important and one could say that Geography has ‘finally come of age’. Geography is unique in bridging the gap between the arts and sciences and allows us to study the ever-increasing impact of humans on the physical environment. Geography gives us the knowledge and understanding of current local, national and global issues, such as climate change, natural hazards, resource management and the energy gap, world trade and globalisation, development and disparity, as well as the consequences of rapid population increase and industrialisation. Every day you will find several articles in the broadsheet newspapers that relate directly to our teaching syllabus. Geography is a relevant and important subject and also equips the pupils with valuable skills that are attractive to future employers. The staff in the Geography Department are passionate about their subject and hope to pass on their enthusiasm, knowledge and skills to the girls through modern, lively and dynamic teaching methods. We aim to stimulate their interest and curiosity in their world and enable them to debate and discuss these important issues that will increasingly affect all of our lives. We strive to make the pupils at KEHS autonomous learners and informed world citizens. We are a very well resourced department and have been the school leaders in ICT. Each of our three dedicated teaching rooms are equipped with Interactive Whiteboards and data projectors, as well as televisions, videos and DVD players. The interactive whiteboards are used extensively throughout all Key Stages and the girls are encouraged to use different types of media when undertaking homework and projects. We have built up a very well resourced 6th Form library which provides access to relevant textbooks, journals, newspapers and other publications and we also have our own networked computers for individual study.
Enrichment in GeographyPupils should see the geography subject folder in the shared area of the school network to access a wide range of enrichment resources, such as geographical publications relevant to the topics studied in each year group.
In order for pupils to further their knowledge and understanding of the world we advise girls to keep a close eye on relevant stories via online news, such as the BBC news website. One of the best ways for girls to quickly access the relevant articles and topical discussions is through our school Royal Geographical Society ‘Geography in the News’ subscription. This website link provides a wealth of up to date and relevant articles and provides direct support for pupils through topical case studies, links to academic research and lectures, and monthly news round-ups. There are direct links to the originating newspapers as well as to video links and more detailed and complex research papers. Girls should look on the notice board outside G2 to get the log on details.

Fieldwork is viewed as a crucial component to Geography and a valuable learning tool. Fieldwork is integrated into the teaching curriculum, with a total of 10 different trips each year for different year groups. These include residential trips to the Lake District in the L5th and North Wales in the L6th.
Every other year we run a 6th form residential trip to Iceland, and are planning to continue these ventures in to the future. They provide a unique study opportunity in an environment born through volcanism and sculpted by ice, wind and water.
We strongly recommend that pupils download Google Earth at home.As well as being a fascinating resource for general interest purposes, this free geographical information system (comprising satellite imagery of almost the entire surface of the earth) can be of real value to your studies in Geography.
