FRENCH DEPARTMENT

OVERALL AIMS:
To teach the linguistic skills needed to communicate informally in spoken and written French.
To promote an interest in and understanding of France and French speaking countries.
For AS/A2 students: to develop more formal linguistic registers and familiarity with the major aspects of French society.
To give students access to the literature of French speaking countries and to encourage them to read on their own in French.

Reading Programme
Girls are encouraged to subscribe to a French magazine and from year 10 are asked to read a French book every half-term. French magazines as well as a wide selection of novels, plays, poetry and reference books are also available in the library.

French Sessions
Four times a week at lunchtime, we offer help to any student who wishes to practise, revise, extend and reinforce any aspect of the French language.

Success Rate
The French department has an excellent record of results in public examinations and many girls go forward to study French at university, either as a specialism or in combination with other subjects.
