Biology

Biology is a very popular subject. This level of interest has developed from the first year, in which we aim to stimulate curiosity and enjoyment in Biology. Girls develop abilities and skills that are relevant to the study, practice and application of Biology, which are useful in everyday life.

Stem cell research, cloning, GM foods, the effect of climate change on Biodiversity….

These topics regularly make the headlines. An understanding of Biological principles is essential to appreciate how developments in Biological Sciences are impacting on our lives. Biology at KEHS develops this understanding together with a questioning and lively interest in the Natural World.

The Biology curriculum, from the first year through to GCSE and A level , is delivered by experts with an enthusiasm for the subject. We aim to stimulate curiosity and enjoyment in Biology whilst nurturing an investigative and evaluative approach that develops skills which enable success in the study of the subject and beyond.

For the first two years pupils follow a course which is not linked to Key Stage 3 but has been developed by the Biology Department. Topics studied include:-

·       Habitats

·       Presenting data

·       Reproduction

·       Insects

·       Microbiology

·       Forensic science

At GCSE OCR Gateway Biology is studied which provides an excellent Biological foundation for study at A level as well as providing a firm scientific literacy for all students.

AQA Biology is the chosen course at AS and A2 level. A residential Field Course takes place in the autumn term of the U6th.

All the courses are delivered in well appointed and equipped laboratories where our numerous living specimens enhance learning.  The beautiful grounds of the school enrich the study of Ecology and Environmental issues.
