Communications

The Principal is always glad to see parents by appointment. Meetings with year groups of parents are held annually.

Parents are very welcome at a variety of activities eg. drama, concerts and sports matches.

We consider good communications vital to our work at King Edward VI High School for Girls. These have both formal and informal aspects.

In years 3 to L5 parents receive two reports from the school during the course of the year. The principle aim of the progress report, is to alert everyone to any cause for concern which can be immediately addressed. It does not attempt to give detail of a girl’s progress. This comes in the end of year report which includes examination results.

U5 have full reports in the Spring term. After their mid-year mock examinations a grade sheet is issued.

The Sixth Form have full reports in the Spring term.

Parents’ meetings (At Homes) are held each year for every year group. On these occasions, all the staff who teach a girl are normally available to discuss her work with parents.

There is an annual Open Evening held at the end of the summer term when parents are invited into school to see displays of the girls’ work, exhibitions etc.

Towards the beginning of the Autumn term girls receive an up to date copy of the term and holiday dates for the following academic year. The Principal’s annual report is published during the Autumn term on the school website. At the beginning of each term girls receive two copies of the School Calendar for the term, one for themselves and one for their parents. The School emails a regular newsletter to all parents which is also published on the school website. Occasional letters are sent via the girls during the year relating to specific matters. Parents are encouraged to give their e-mail address to school so standard letters can be sent electronically.

There is a rolling programme of curriculum meetings, where three or four departments present to parents broad issues for their subject area and recent curriculum innovations.

Three handbooks, giving outlines of curricular followed and examination boards are available for 3rds to U4th, L5th to U5th and Sixth Form. These are sent to parents at the appropriate point in a girl’s school career. All are published on the Curriclum Booklets page of the school website.

Informal communications are equally important to us. Relatively minor matters are probably most efficiently handled by communication with form tutors. It is always difficult to be precise about the most useful member of staff to consult but in general terms more significant matters could be raised with co-ordinators (3rds – Mrs. J. Smith, L4- Mrs K Sangha , U4 – Mrs. A. Young, L5-Ms L Franco, U5 - Mrs. B. Thompson  and 6th form – Mrs J. Whitehead) and beyond that academic matters are the responsibility of the Vice Principal-Academic – Ms S. Pallister and pastoral matters, the Vice Principal – Miss A. Warne. The Principal is always happy to speak to parents but she is unlikely to be very useful if you are trying to locate a lost hockey sock or check on last night’s physics homework!

Where parents have separate addresses, copies of reports, invitations to At Homes, curriculum meetings, Open Evening and the termly school calendar are sent to both.

Unless specifically requested, only one copy of other information will be given out for parents. If a family requires two copies of other information please inform Mrs. Williams the School Secretary in writing. If parents do not receive information they are anticipating about a school event, please contact the school office.
