Regional Winner of The Cranmer Awards General News http://www.kehs.org.uk/newsDetails/356/0 Congratulations to Oreoluwa Odubiyi of U4S who has been named regional winnder of the Cranmer Awards. To secure success, Oreoluwa had to memorise and recite passages from the 1662 Prayer Book - a form of liturgy which captures the beauty and antiquity of traditional language.

Oreoluwa chose Psalm 46 as her initial passage. It contains two very memorable phrases: . Oreoluwa\'s second passage was Mary\'s Song - The Magnificat with its profound theme of God\'s care for the lowly.

Dr Margaret Davies, who is the Regional Organiser at the Canmer Awards, commented on the clarity of Oreoluwa\'s delivery and urged her to prepare well for the national finals in London early next Spring.

Congratulations Oreoluwa - we are very proud of you and the way in which you have represented the R.S Department specifically and KEHS in general.

Year 5 Girls have a great time at KEHS\'s Enrichment Activity Day General News http://www.kehs.org.uk/newsDetails/339/0 On Tuesday 21st June, 30 children from schools in West Bromwich joined us for a morning of activities themed around colour. The girls enjoyed looking at Keats\' sonnet to blue and then followed this up with their own collaborative sonnet writing. We explored rhyme scheme, rhythm and imagery. Girls in the Lower Sixth who are studying English at AS also came along to help the visitors and give extra help and support. At the end of the session the Year 5s had written a most impressive sonnet which they then performed to their teachers. Their collaborative sonnet is now on display in Room 10. A similar set of enrichment activities was followed by the girls in Science.

After a busy morning of activities the girls enjoyed a picnic out in the garden and were joined by some of our current Year 7, who shared their experiences of being educated in an all girls environment as well as finding out more about our visitors.

This was followed by manoeuvres on the school field where they learnt how to march in ranks, form a testudo, and practised using sling shots and spears. Ill-disciplined troops were soon knocked into shape.

In the second part of the day the 3rds studied different aspects of Roman myths and history. Roman emperors, the early history of Rome, the Trojan horse, and the tale of Piramus and Thisbe were presented to them. This inspired them to produce some lovely art work and interesting dramatic performances.

The 3rds enjoyed their day very much, and this year, fortunately, no-one was seriously injured or fatally wounded.(Only joking of course!)

Roman Bath Delights U4th General News http://www.kehs.org.uk/newsDetails/314/0 On Wednesday 9th March the whole of the Upper Four and the Classics Department went on a day long trip to Bath. It took us two hours to get there, but we were soon to find out that it was well worth the wait! We walked together to the Roman Baths, where we were impressed by the beautiful architecture. We looked around in small groups accompanied by teachers and saw the remains of what used to be a buzzing place of Roman social and religious activity, as well as a place to get clean. The reconstruction of the site was amazing and really helped us to imagine how the Romans would have seen the sacred spring and baths back then. After we had completed our research we were given a little free time to wander around the historic town. It was a truly memorable experience for us all! The aim of this trip was to give the pupils taking part a taste of the STEM subjects and inspire them to think about a career in one of them. The first talk gave an outline of this. The second talk was very inspiring. The lady giving it talked about how she had turned her hobby (design and technology) into her profession. She told us about the processes she had gone through to achieve this. She showed us three of the products that she had invented- the toothpaste dispenser (for people with arthritis), the water carrier (for people in Africa who have to travel long distances to collect water) and a fridge that does not require electricity to run. Her talk was also about having the courage to make the most of a skill and not being shy to tell others about it. The workshops included gene sampling, an astronomy quiz and bridge building. All the workshops were interesting and enjoyable. The last talk was a summary of all of the STEM subjects and also information on making subject choices and how they can influence our future. It relly was a thought provoking, excellent day.
