Charles Dickens 200th Anniversary
Staff and students at KEHS are preparing to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens with a variety of events this term.
On Monday 6th February the celebrations will commence with a whole school assembly on Charles Dickens. Then on the following day all girls and staff will be given a book written by Dickens as a gift from the school to mark the occasion.
Towards the end of the month, once we’ve had a chance to read our novels, there will be a reading group event on Wednesday 29th February. We are being invited to bring along any Charles Dickens book that we think has a marvellous opening chapter. These will be discussed and our choices compared! That evening girls will head over the road to the University of Birmingham to see an exhibition dedicated to Charles Dickens, showcasing rare book and manuscript material. The exhibition highlights Dickens' connection to Birmingham, his love of the theatre and his stories about the supernatural. This will then be followed by a lecture on his life and works.
Finally, on Monday 26th March, Miss Evans is hosting a reading group in her study on the Dicken’s classic Hard Times. She will be inviting staff and sixth form girls to attend the event and all parents are also most welcome to join them to take part in the discussion.
