Shining Futures

Today’s GCSE results include 90.5 per cent of all results graded at A* and A – an increase of 4 per cent on 2009’s results. An impressive 60 per cent of all exams received an A* grade – up 10 per cent on this time last year.

Sisters Cathy and Victoria Solari are both set for shining futures if their 2010 exam results are an indication of what’s in store for them. Cathy achieved 5 Grades A* in last week’s A level results and younger sister, Victoria, learnt today that she has achieved Grades A* in all eleven of her GCSEs including Spanish, Geography and Religious Studies.

Cathy’s ambition is to become an astronaut and next month she’ll be heading to the University of Cambridge to begin her studies in  Physical Natural Sciences with help from an OCR West Midlands Bursary. Victoria will continue her studies at KEHS by studying for A levels in French, Spanish, Geography, Maths and Further Maths.

Sarah Evans, comments, ‘Cathy and Victoria’s A* Grades are testimony to the flair and passion they share for their subjects. We are very proud of both sisters and all of their classmates who have demonstrated the self-discipline needed to ensure they have the best possible chance of following their chosen paths when they leave KEHS.’

KEHS is unusual in requiring all girls to study eight compulsory subjects up to GSCE.  Because of the selective intake of the school, teaching takes the girls well beyond what is needed for a pass at GCSE and aims to give the girls deep insights into the eight core subjects ensuring excellent foundations for Advanced Level but also ensuring girls who leave a subject after GCSE have a well rounded understanding of it. The rich broad base enables them to continue their studies in whichever direction they wish. Subjects currently offered in addition to the core curriculum include languages such as Greek, Spanish and Italian, and more humanities and creative subjects including history, music and art.

Sarah Evans states, ‘Our core GCSE curriculum ensures girls are prepared for further education with a strong understanding of academic subjects. The additional courses on offer give girls the opportunity to focus on their own interests, in whichever field they may lie. By offering subjects such as GCSE Astronomy out of school curriculum time, girls are encouraged to develop their own understanding of a topic and decide whether these are areas they would like to develop beyond GCSE level. We are extremely proud of all of our GCSE pupils, their broad curriculum will undoubtedly stand them in good stead for the next step in their education.’
