Shreya fights off the competition
16 March 2010: Shreya Anil, in Year 7, has mastered the art of Sabre Fencing in less than two years and she carries the current title of Junior International Champion to prove it!
Shreya earned her title by competing in the Leon Paul Junior Series which took place throughout the year around the country. She was named overall winner following a string of triumphant competitions.
Shreya took up fencing at her junior school in Bristol and quickly picked up the style which has led to her current success. When Shreya’s family relocated to Birmingham, she carried on fencing and now trains twice a week in Coventry and Warwick at the Salle Ursa Fencing Club coached by Peter Rome.
Shreya, the current England youth champion in the under 11 age category, recently fought off the competition at a regional qualifying event in Birmingham for the British Youth Championship. She won the gold medal in the under 12 girls’ category and is now excitedly waiting for the actual event which takes place in Sheffield at the beginning of May.
She comments, ‘I first started fencing because I thought it sounded like a really interesting sport and I was excited about trying something different. I’ve grown to love competing and the British Youth Championship is the perfect opportunity to put all of my practice into action.’
KEHS offers a fencing club as part of its wide extra-curricular programme, but the majority of members currently use the ‘foil’ or ‘epee’ whereas Shreya prefers the ‘sabre’ as her weapon of choice. Sarah Evans comments, ‘We encourage all of our girls to find out where their talents and interests lie and we are all very proud of Shreya’s wonderful achievements.’
