KEHS Guests Dig Deep

On the 5th June the school held the main fundraising event in its 125th anniversary celebrations  – a Gala dinner where Lord Digby Jones, former Director General of the CBI, was the guest of honour.

Lord Digby Jones, a scholarship boy himself, gave a rousing after-dinner speech on the importance of schools such as KEHS and the contributions they make to providing society with the next generation of leaders, equipped with the skills needed to be able to grow Britain’s economy in the global marketplace. He went on to share how he loved coming back to Birmingham as not only are his personal roots in the city, but it is the manufacturing heart of both the country and in particular the British car industry, which is still a world leader. A Birmingham boy through and through, the charismatic Lord Jones commented:

‘You can take the lad out of Brum, but you can’t take Brum out of the lad!’

Lord Jones was joined by over 170 guests who enjoyed a three-course dinner prepared by KEHS’ catering staff, with some of our girls pupils waiting on tables. His speech was followed by an auction of items and experiences which had all been kindly donated to the school by local businesses and former pupils and patrons of the school.

Auctioneer, Rory Daly of Bond Wolfe Auctions, provided guests with a fast paced dialogue which ensured each item raised as much money as possible. Two lots proved so popular that Rory was able to secure a promise of two prizes from the benefactor - doubling the lots’ contribution towards the Bursary Appeal. One of these items was the highlight of the auction, a tour of The House of Lords followed by lunch with Lord Jones which raised a massive £1500!

Additional items included a personal shopping experience with a makeover in Harvey Nichols beauty department, a chauffeur-driven red Ferrari F430 F1 for a day and a visit to watch a recording of ‘The Archers’ at the BBC in the Mailbox, meet the cast and receive a signed script.

Sarah Evans would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the evening such a resounding success.
