Birmingham’s Best Return to KEHS

We officially opened our 125 art exhibition on the 10th March with a private view which was attended by over 70 guests including the contributing artists, Old Edwardians and friends of the school and was jointly opened by Marie-Anne McQuay, curator at Spike Island, Bristol and Sarah Evans.
The exhibition, which is on display in the art gallery at KEHS until March 27th, features work by former pupils who have gone on to forge successful careers as artists and designers in their own right. The 125 exhibition showcases the achievements of past pupils and highlights the importance to the school of creative studies in addition to pure academic subjects. Many of the artists have studied fields as diverse as natural science and medicine at Oxbridge, but their love of art has always remained at the forefront of their lives and some have gone on to further studies at world-class centres including the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford and Central Saint Martins, London.
Pieces on display consist of contributions from nine women including freelance artist, illustrator and animator, Karen Cheung, Worcester-based fine artist Sara Hayward, ceramicist Kate Egawa and Birmingham-based portrait painter, Emily Porter-Salmon who is the youngest member of the RBSA.
Participating artist Emily Porter-Salmon has kindly donated a portrait commission to the holder of the winning number in a competition organised by current pupils at KEHS. Head of Art, Liz Edwards, elaborates, ‘When we originally began planning an exhibition which would form part of the 125 celebrations I had no idea that it would result in a show of this calibre. I know that we have seen some amazing talent walk through the art room doors over the years here at KEHS, but I have been completely overwhelmed by the interest and enthusiasm which has greeted us from all of the contributing artists. An awful lot of people have worked extremely hard to organise this exhibition and if we can raise funds for the Bursary Appeal as well, it will all have been worth the effort!’
