The Sunday Times West Midlands Independent Secondary School of the Year

Junior Production - Arabian Nights

KEHS Community Read

This week, KEHS began our annual Community Read! To encourage girls to read from a wide range of authors and genres, forms in the Thirds were each given a different book to read. These books will then be rotated around each form, each half term, to ensure that all titles have been read by the end of the academic year.

The Stuart Southall Room and the John Speed Atlas UPDATE!

Recently our archive collection was valued, and one item was discovered of particular note – John Speed’s Atlas; The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain. Speed was a noted cartographer of his time and produced many maps and Atlases such as this. Printed in 1616, this book is older than the school itself!

English Speaking Union Schools' Mace Debating Competition

Well done to Anushna and Nimhara in the Lower Sixth for representing KEHS last week at the English Speaking Union Schools' Mace competition. The Schools’ Mace was founded in 1957 and is one of the oldest and largest debating competitions for schools in England.

Model United Nations Conference

On Saturday 18th November, 19 students ranging from Lower Fifth to Upper Sixth attended the Model United Nations conference held at Malvern St James School. The conference opened with a speech from Peter Murphy, a former EU ambassador to Cameroon.

Children in Need Day

Today, KEHS saw an array of spotty headbands, socks, tights, scarves, tops and Pudsey ears for Children in Need day. Many thanks to everyone who has taken part and, in particular, to Lower 4S and Mrs Douglas for all their hard work in promoting such an important cause.

More Sport Success!

This season’s Hockey County Tournaments have seen some fantastic results from KEHS teams with the Under 16s achieving first place, the Under 14s placing second and the Under 18s coming in third place. Well done to all the teams who have now progressed into the Midland Rounds! Netball

Ultimate Frisbee

​On Sunday 12th November, two KEHS teams competed in the UK Ultimate Juniors and Schools Women's Indoor Nationals in Wolverhampton. After a gruelling six-match day, during which the teams faced numerous current GB players, the Under 14 team placed 5th and the Under 17 team placed 8th.

Silver CREST Award Success

Last year, KEHS offered Engineering as an enrichment option in the Lower Fifth. This entailed the students working on a project of their own choice in order to enter it for a CREST award, which is the only nationally recognised accreditation scheme for STEM project work.

On Friday 10th November, the Upper Fourth came together to enjoy an interesting and engaging interactive Volcanology lecture by Dr Phil Gravestock. We were introduced to an imaginary situation (although based on real volcanic activity).

Autumn Challenge Workshop

On Tuesday 14th November, KEHS welcomed 70 children from a number of primary schools across Birmingham to our annual Autumn Challenge Workshop. Throughout the morning, gifted and talented pupils from years 5 and 6 took part in Maths, Science and Spanish lessons.

Barber Institute Lunchtime Recital

On Friday 10th November, our annual lunchtime recital took place at the Barber Concert Hall as part of their Lunchtime Concert series. The recital opened with an accomplished and moving performance of the Allegretto from Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.6, Op. 101, performed by the Corelli Quartet.

Along the first floor corridor in the heart of the MFL Department sits the Stuart Southall Room. It houses some of the oldest books KEHS owns, some dating back to before the date of the school’s founding!

Awards Evening Music

On Friday 3rd November, we held our annual Awards Evening for last year’s Upper Sixth. A huge thank you must go to our resident Piano Trio who gave a professional performance of works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Glinka for 30 minutes while people were taking their seats in the hall.

​The first part of our day involved a visit to Blythe Valley Business Park. We then moved onto Monkspath, a residential area of Solihull, which we were then able to compare with Sparkhill, Shirley and the Central Business District.

RS Conference

​On Tuesday 7th November, the Upper Sixth Religious Studies students travelled to Manchester to attend a conference designed to support their A Level course. During the day, various themes were explored including a seminar from Peter Vardy who covered the topic ‘What do we mean by God?’

Before half term, the Thirds went on their first residential trip, the long-awaited visit to the Pioneer Centre at Cleobury Mortimer! The girls took part in exciting outdoor and indoor activities such as climbing, abseiling, caving and challenge courses, as well as meeting exotic animals from skunks to spiders.

Angela Clayton-Turner Visit

​On Tuesday, Angela Clayton-Turner, an Old Edwardian and chair of the London OE Club, came to talk to the Lower Sixth about Dementia. As an experienced dementia carer and "Dementia Friend", Angela's insight into this often sensitive topic was well-informed, detailed and eye-opening.

Awards Evening

On Friday 3rd October, we welcomed back the Class of 2017 for Awards Evening, a celebration of the wonderful things the girls achieved here at KEHS. After a warm reception reuniting with their former teachers, the girls and their families were regaled with a keynote speech from Old Edwardian Jess Butcher.
