Study Skills

With GCSE and A Level examinations fast approaching, we bid a temporary farewell this week to our Upper Fifth and Sixth Form students, who have left to go on study leave. At KEHS, we work with all girls to help them to develop and refine their study skills.

Music Success for Lauren!

Over the bank holiday weekend, Lauren Zhang in the Upper Fourth competed in the Wales International Piano Festival in Caernarfon. After passing the screening stage in March, this competition took two rounds and lasted for two days. Lauren competed with participants coming from all over the UK and abroad.

ARUP Engineering Presentation

On Thursday 28th April, a team of five girls in the Lower Sixth took a trip to Blythe Valley Business Park where they presented the engineering project they have been working on, with ARUP, over the past few months.

Creak Memorial Prize

​In 1883, the first headmistress of KEHS, Miss Creak was chosen from over thirty applicants for her impressive academic record and bold ideas. She left a lasting legacy, her ideas shaping the current ethos of the school. Her dedication and passion for KEHS is celebrated every year through the Creak Memorial Prize.

AGINCOURT 600 TOURNAMENT

On 12th March three girls: Anya Basra, Makeda Brown and Cerian Richmond-Jones participated in the prestigious “Agincourt 600” Tournament, a national historical public-speaking competition for students aged 15-19, to commemorate the 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, at King’s College London.

STEM DAY

​On Wednesday 9th March, the Upper Fourth spent the day in the hall undertaking a variety of activities designed to pique our interest in following a scientific path. We were split up into teams of four and first asked to construct a car capable of carrying ‘supplies’ (a wooden egg!) and a bridge which it could cross.

Dr Aisha Ahmad, Chief Executive of the charity 'All Sports Women' and a Muslim herself has led two sessions for Lower Fifth girls aimed at raising awareness of the use of social media for grooming and radicalisation.

BASE COMPETITION

​On Friday 4th March, two teams of students from Lower Sixth Economics took part in the annual Institute of Chartered Accountants’ Business and Accounting Competition held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground. There were 18 teams from all across Birmingham taking part in the day long challenge.

LANGUAGES AND FILM SIXTH FORM STUDY AFTERNOON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM

​On the afternoon of Wednesday 24th February, a group of Sixth Form French and Spanish students attended a series of lectures and workshops at the University of Birmingham. Focusing on 'Languages and Film', the afternoon began with a very impressive talk on what we can learn about a culture through cinema.

On Tuesday 8th March, the Thirds and Lower Fourth girls enjoyed an illuminating talk from former elite athlete, current journalist and author Cathy Wood about responsible and safe use of social media. Cathy founded her own company to help young people understand the positive power of social media.

​Following their success in the semifinal which took place last week, Shriya Sanghera, Najeeha Siddiqi, Saffron Pugher and Sarah Tinley (in the Upper and Lower Fifth) attended the final of the West Midlands Chemistry Teacher Centre Annual Chemistry Competition on Tuesday, held at King Edward VI Camp Hill School.

​During half term a group of Sixth Formers went to London to take part in a Female Insight Day at Goldman Sachs. Speakers at different stages of their careers shared their work experiences and explained about the many ethical programmes that are run by the firm.

GCSE Astronomy Success!

Congratulations to Kiran Saini, Natasha Bhole, Melissa Yao and Maria Skaria in the Upper Fifth who have all been awarded certificates by the Royal Astronomical Society for being one of the top 12 highest performing students in the country in their GCSE Astronomy examinations.​

RS Girls Win Awards Celebrating Cultural Diversity

The creative talents of Maha Salman and Laura Stevens were recognised at a glittering Awards ceremony held recently in a top London hotel. Laura's poem 'A Powerful Force' was chosen as the overall winner from over 1800 entries in the NASUWT creative writing section of the National ‘Arts and Minds’ competition.

Incredible Poetry Success for Pratiksha!

Congratulations to Pratiksha Saha who has been named Young Poet of the Year by the Foyle Publishing Company. This is an incredibly prestigious competition with over 12,000 entries each year. Pratiksha received her award from the poet Liz Berry at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Model UN

At the start of October, seventeen girls attended the fifteenth annual Model United Nations conference at Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester. KEHS were given two countries to represent: South Sudan and the Ivory Coast. Each girl participated in debates on issues currently facing the UN as part of ten committees.

RS Department News

The RS department has been fortunate this term to welcome speakers who have added enrichment to community life and to RS lessons. The Reverend Anthony Perry of St Mary's Church in Bearwood led our Harvest assembly from a platform filled with gifts which will be distributed to those in need through a local Christian..

Dr Iain Law visits the RS Department

This week, Dr Iain Law, Undergraduate Admissions tutor for Philosophy at the University of Birmingham visited KEHS at the invitation of Mrs Young and met with girls studying RS to answer questions and offer advice to those considering reading Philosophy/PPE and related subjects at university.

Upper 5th Trip to Parliament

​On Monday 7th September the PDM Department and the whole of the Upper 5th made their way to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. They spent time in the new state of the art Education Centre and were even able to sit in a virtual House of Commons.
